Life Casting Done with Prosthetic Alginate.
Alginate is a powder made from seaweed. I mix it with warm water and it turns into a mixture like the consistency of extra thick cake batter, then after a minute or two (just enough time to mix it and quickly put the hand or foot into it) it turns into a rubbery mould. Dentists use this product to take impressions of our teeth.
It is very safe, odorless, colourless, comfortable, non-toxic and hypo allergenic.
After testing many different types of Alginate, A Lasting Impression has chosen a very high quality alginate that you certainly can not buy at your local craft store, it is designed perfectly for taking your precious babies hand and foot castings.
We use warm water to mix with it, so that your baby does not feel uncomfortable, the temperature is about the same as you would use to give them a bath. The alginate solidifies into the rubber mould and then, we then pull out the hand or foot.
For face and Body casting a slower setting alginate is used, layers of plaster bandages are applied, to create a hard shell called a mother mould.
Along with our special technique the castings come out with unbelievable detail.

Getting a flat speadout hand can be difficult to acheive with small babies, some babies naturally layout their hands like in the picture to the left, but most often they position their hands in the same way that they usually hold their hands. I have had many parents comment on how their babies hold their hands naturally and will always be reminded of this over the years as their children grow up when they look at their castings.
But, if you prefer to have your babies hands flat and spread out, I have a couple of ways to acheive this, using a different method using alginate and also a different material (a soft rubbery clay) I can try by making a few extra molds of their hands with just a small extra cost of the material. Even then some babies just don't want to open up their hands and in these cases I recommend doing their hands in the most natural way that they prefer.

Plaque Impressions |
The third method is the
'Plaque Imprints where Multiple impressions are taken from one container or clay and cast into one piece of cement.
The Modeling clay is a soft non-toxic water based clay that takes the impressions of hands and feet with exceptional detail!
|
All Impression and Casting material is non toxic and
has been tested and then used for years and is totally safe for babies.
There have been no reactions reported and we have created hundreds of castings
thus far.
Gypsum: After the mould is made we then pour in our special stone mixture, which hardens to a very hard white stone. The psi of our stone is about 10,000 lbs. which means it is about 10 times stronger than regular plaster of paris.
All Castings can be finished with Gold, Silver, Copper, Bronze,
Antique bronze, antique pewter, Antique Silver,Pearl
and Chrome and many more!
Most Finishes in our shadow boxes are made of a
special mixture of a metallic wax polish,
which creates the look of a solid metal casting,
but for a fraction of the cost. We can also have your
castings bronze plated (the same procedure as having baby shoes bronzed), we
also can have your castings reproduced in real bronze metal and other metals by
our local foundry.
